Chargeback
A payment reversal initiated by a subscriber's bank or credit card company, resulting in lost revenue for the creator.
A chargeback occurs when a subscriber disputes a transaction with their bank or credit card provider, causing the payment to be reversed. For OnlyFans creators, chargebacks represent one of the most frustrating financial challenges, as they result in lost income for content that has already been delivered. The creator not only loses the revenue but may also face additional processing fees.
Chargebacks can happen for several reasons. Sometimes a subscriber legitimately does not recognize a charge on their statement because OnlyFans transactions may appear under a different merchant name. In other cases, a subscriber may intentionally file a dispute after consuming the content, effectively obtaining it for free. This is sometimes referred to as “friendly fraud” and is unfortunately common on content platforms.
To protect yourself from chargebacks, consider watermarking your content so you have evidence of delivery. Keep records of all transactions and interactions with subscribers. OnlyFans does have systems in place to fight fraudulent chargebacks, but the process can be slow. Some creators also use geo-blocking and subscriber verification as additional layers of protection against bad actors.
If you experience frequent chargebacks, review your pricing strategy and subscriber base. Extremely high-priced PPV or tips from new accounts can be red flags. Building a loyal, engaged fanbase with a track record of legitimate payments is the best long-term defense against chargeback losses.
